Carousel Gardens

Back in December an anonymous donor gifted the homeschool group on campus with Friends of City Park membership cards. These cards granted us free access to Storyland and the Botanical Gardens and discounts on other cool things. Last night we enjoyed another perk of the membership--my favorite thus far. We were invited to the membership appreciation night at Carousel Gardens in City Park. Not only did we get unlimited free rides but we also ate free cotton candy, popcorn, and snowballs. Needless to say, the kids were pleased. I love Ryland's little forced grin. Piper finished off Ryland's cotton candy while the guys rode the ferris wheel. I am not that into rides but I was totally into the Haydel's Bakery table. I thought I was getting in line for a measly cookie (if you can call their cookies measly) and then I saw that they were serving little slices of unbelievably delicious cake. Oh. My. Goodness. Perhaps their cakes truly are worth fifty buc...

Snakes and Snail and Puppy Dog Tails

Last week it rained for several days straight here. I, for one, loved it. In fact I was considering how lovely it would be to live in Seattle and always have the promise of drizzle on the windowpane. Others do not share my passion for wet weather, however, and when the sun finally came out on Friday everyone was ready to hit the playground. Unfortunately, in case you hadn't heard, we have a little flooding problem in NOLA and the playground is no exception. My friend, Melissa, had been letting Jathan play at her house with his best buddy, Jacque. She texted me and said they were headed to the playground and wanted to know if she should send Jathan up or let him play warning me that boys cannot NOT play in the mud. Of course it was okay with me if he got a little dirty, 'cause you know I'm cool like that. I grabbed my camera and headed downstairs with Ryland to let him join in the fun. When I got to the bottom floor, this is what I saw: Jathan was having a blast as I e...

Audubon Insectarium

Ever since Jathan discovered that people eat animals he's been asking exactly which animals are suitable for eating. "Do we eat birds?" "Do we eat wolves?" "Do we eat sharks?" And so on and so forth throughout the entire animal kingdom. He finally asked, "Do we eat bugs?" I mentioned that, yes, some people do eat bugs and that maybe we could visit the Insectarium so that he could try a tasty, tasty bug. Yesterday we finally go to go! After church we hit Popeyes where everyone devoured their chicken. BTW the one on Canal is cool because it's cafeteria-style and you can choose your items ala carte meaning if your child wants two biscuits then by golly, she gets two biscuits! = ) Jathan cracked us up saying, "This is so good. Good, good. I love chicken! I am so full!" Ha ha. After Popeyes we headed to the Insectarium, where the kids were absolutely enthralled to look at different insects for the next couple of hours. We saw big, me...
